1. General

1.1 Scope

This specification covers the minimum requirements for hand applied or sprayed-on lightweight fireproofing, suitable for exterior exposure, on supporting structures for equipment and piping, all in accordance with the approved manufacturer’s applicator’s manual per paragraph 3.0 of this specification.

Items not specifically covered herein or in codes, regulations and construction drawings referred to, shall be determined in accordance with good engineering practice and to the satisfaction of Purchaser.

1.2 Standards

All applicable standards as specified in respective paragraphs of this specification shall be adhered to, unless direct deviations are stated.

1.3 Definitions

For the purpose of this specification the following definitions shall apply:

· “Approved” shall mean approved by Purchaser.

· “Approved equivalent” shall mean of equivalent quality and properties and approved by Purchaser.

1.4 Supplementary Documents

This specification shall be read in conjunction with the various contract documents and the construction drawings issued by Purchaser.

1.5 Certificates to be Submitted to Purchaser

1.5.1 Certificate stating that the applicator is a manufacturer approved applicator.

1.5.2 Certificate of application and performance in accordance with the required rating as per paragraph 2.2 upon completion of the work.

2. Materials

2.1 The lightweight hand applied or sprayed-on fireproofing shall comply with the following:

· density, dry in place: <engineer to complete>

· density, freshly applied: <engineer to complete>

2.2 The basic required minimum rating for fireproofing shall be: 2 hours in accordance with the high rise temperature/time curve for hydrocarbon types of fires per UL1709 and/or BS476 Part 20, Appendix D.

2.3 If, and when local codes or regulations are more stringent than the provisions stipulated in this specification, then the local codes or regulations shall prevail.

3. Approved Manufacturer’s Applicator’s Manual

3.1 <engineer to complete>

3.2 Exclusions from and/or Additions to the Applicator’s Manual <engineer to complete>

4. Reinforcement and Fixation

4.1 Reinforcement and fixation shall be in accordance with the manufacturer’s applicator’s manual, approved exclusions and/or additions as applicable per paragraph 3.2.

5. Spray Equipment

5.1 The spray equipment is subject to Purchaser’s review.

5.2 All safety requirements shall be observed.

6. Application of Lightweight Fireproofing

6.1 Application shall be in accordance with “Manufacturer’s Applicator’s Manual”. See paragraph 3.

6.2 Lightweight fireproofing shall be applied without construction joints. If the application of fireproofing is unavoidably interrupted, the joint shall be roughened, brushed and cleaned before casting or spraying is resumed.

6.3 If hand application or spraying has to be continued at temperatures below +5ºC, adequate precautions shall be taken to the satisfaction of Purchaser. These precautions shall be one or more of the following: <engineer to complete>

6.3.1 Storage of materials in a dry shed, off the ground up to maximum twelve months from the date of manufacturing.

6.3.2 Air temperature and temperature of the substrates to be fireproofed shall be well above 0ºC by means of sheltering and heated air, etc., according to the approved manufacturer’s applicator’s manual. See paragraph 3.

6.4 When the total thickness of the lightweight fireproofing layer is reached, the surface shall be finished by trowel or similar approved method, according to the approved manufacturer’s applicator’s manual. See paragraph 3.

6.5 The lightweight fireproofing shall be protected during curing from the harmful effects of sunshine, rain, drying winds and cold.

Curing requirements according to the manufacturer’s applicator’s manual shall be observed. See paragraph 3.

6.6 No reconstruction or repairs to faulty work shall be done without the permission of Purchaser.

6.7 Shape of lightweight fireproofing:

· the execution shall be “profile following” for “wide” profiles over 300 mm in height.

6.8 Beams, which are to be fireproofed and are meant to support piping or grating are in principal not to be fireproofed on the top surface of the beams.

The fireproofing shall be installed in such a way as to allow for the installation of a sealant.

6.9 All terminations of the fireproofing against steel must be sloped to shed water. A mastic seal shall be applied at the junction of the fireproofing and steel.

The sealant shall always be applied in a recess.

7. Treatment of Steel Surfaces

7.1 Before applying lightweight fireproofing, the steel surfaces have been treated by others as follows: <engineer to complete>

7.2 Fireproofing applicator shall confirm in writing the soundness and compatibility of steel surface treatment per paragraph 7.1 with selected and approved lightweight fireproofing.

Applicator may apply a tack coat to ensure the bondage of the fireproofing material to the substrate.

Once commenced with the application of fireproofing shall mean that the applicator has accepted the steel surface treatment to meet his guarantee towards Purchaser.

8. Inspection and Quality Control

8.1 General

The fireproofing applicator shall inspect each operation included in his scope of work, such as material receipt, activities prior to and during application of fireproofing.

Purchaser, however, reserves the right to inspect any or all of the operations.

Inspection and approval of materials and/or workmanship by Purchaser shall not be construed as relieving the applicator of his responsibilities.

8.2 Reporting

Fireproofing applicator shall report in writing on the results of his inspection on the hold points such as: <engineer to complete>

8.2.1 Receipt of Materials

· appropriate checks to verify materials received at site are the same as specified or approved materials. Verification shall include inspection of labels, material safety data sheets and delivery receipts. If unspecified or unapproved materials are located at the site, such material shall be removed from the site;

· warehousing of materials to assure product dryness and life.

8.2.2 Activities Prior to Application

· Submittal of Certificate stating that the applicator is a manufacturer approved applicator.

· Surface cleaning, if required.

· Check primer and finish painting.

· Release of items to be fireproofed.

8.2.3 Activities During Application

· Appropriate checks to verify materials applied are the same as the specified or approved materials.

· Reinforcement and fixation.

· Uniform surface without gaps and voids.

· Thickness applied.

8.2.4 Activities at Completion of Application

· Overall inspection.

· Submittal of certificate of application and performance in accordance with the required rating as per paragraph 2.2.
